RepoVerdict

Check a GitHub repository before you build a feature. RepoVerdict tells you if it already exists, is being worked on or was turned down, and shows you the proof.

What it does

Before you build a feature for an open-source project, you need to know three things. Has someone already built it? Is someone working on it right now? Did the maintainers already say no? Finding out usually means reading through issues, pull requests and commits by hand, and it is easy to miss the one old thread that answers the question.

RepoVerdict does that reading for you. You give it a GitHub repository, a commit and a short description of the feature you have in mind. It searches the repository's issues, pull requests, commits and branches, then gives you a verdict with links to everything it based that verdict on.

The six verdicts

  • ExistingThe feature is already in the code or in an open pull request.
  • OpenThere is an open issue or pull request tracking the same work.
  • In progressAn open pull request is already building it.
  • ClosedA related issue or pull request was merged or completed.
  • RejectedThe maintainers decided against it.
  • NewNothing related was found, so the idea is fair game.

How it works

RepoVerdict reads the repository through the GitHub API and compares what it finds with your feature description. With a free GitHub token it can make 5,000 requests an hour instead of 60. If you add an OpenAI key, it also uses a language model to match ideas that are worded differently, and if you don't, it falls back to keyword matching.

There is also a search page for finding repositories to work on. It filters by stars, language, size, licence and recent activity, then ranks the results by how good a fit they are.

Run it yourself

You need Python 3.10 or newer. Then:

git clone https://github.com/EmmanuelAyanleye/Repo-Verdict.git
cd Repo-Verdict
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
cp .env.example .env
python manage.py migrate
python manage.py runserver

Open http://127.0.0.1:8000 and check your first repository.

Help build it

RepoVerdict is open source under the MIT License, and I would love help with it. Bug reports, ideas, tests and documentation are all welcome, and it is a friendly place for a first pull request. Read the contributing guide to get started, or open an issue if something isn't working.

Who made it

I'm Emmanuel Ayanleye, a UI/UX designer and Django developer from Ibadan, Nigeria. I built RepoVerdict for my own open-source work, because I kept spending too long checking whether an idea had already been done. You can see more of my work on the projects page or get in touch.
